Carl Taylor

Psychologist | Coach | Supervisor

Carl Taylor is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist, registered with both the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Practitioner Psychologist. He is recognised by the BPS as a Senior Practitioner in Psychotherapy and an Applied Psychology Practice Supervisor.

He is accredited in Cognitive Analytic Therapy (ACAT) and Mentalization-Based Therapy (BPC) and is an accredited Practitioner Coach with the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC). He is currently completing an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Coaching, working towards EMCC Senior Practitioner accreditation.

Carl has over 23 years’ experience as a psychologist, including 14 years in senior NHS roles. His career has spanned university counselling services, charities, and NHS secondary care mental health teams. He previously led the Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) and Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) services within the Lewisham Integrated Psychological Therapies Team at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

Since establishing independent practice in 2020, Carl has worked with a wide range of adults, including many professionals navigating complex personal and professional demands. His work offers a psychologically grounded space where people can think carefully about themselves, gain clarity, and consider how they want to move forward.

Early Professional Experience

After completing his undergraduate degree in psychology, Carl began his career at the National Housing Federation’s Feedback Service, a consultancy specialising in social housing research.

Alongside this role, he undertook postgraduate training in Counselling Psychology, initially working full-time and later part-time as the demands of clinical training increased. In the final years of the service he led a business review and transition process, assessing its future viability as either an in-house function or a standalone company.

This early experience strengthened his skills in strategic thinking, evaluation, and team coordination, which continue to inform his approach to coaching, supervision, and psychological practice today.

Approach

Carl’s work is grounded in the belief that greater self-understanding enables more deliberate and sustainable change.

Across many years in NHS services, independent practice, and service development, he has seen how powerful it can be when people are given the space to think carefully about themselves and what truly matters to them.

In psychological therapy, the focus is often on understanding patterns shaped by earlier experience and how these continue to influence relationships, decisions, and sense of self. It offers a steady and reflective space to explore these patterns and create the conditions for meaningful, lasting change.

In coaching, the focus is often on present challenges, leadership, direction, and future development. It provides a structured space to examine decision-making patterns, navigate complexity or transition, and think deliberately about how you want to lead, work, and move forward.

Across both areas of work, the emphasis is on thinking carefully, slowing things down, and engaging honestly with what may need to change.

Qualifications and Training

Carl holds extensive academic and professional qualifications in counselling psychology, psychotherapy, supervision, and coaching.
