Psychologist | Coach | Supervisor
Carl Taylor is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist, recognised as a Senior Practitioner in Psychotherapy and an Applied Psychology Practice Supervisor (BPS). He is an HCPC-registered Practitioner Psychologist, an accredited Cognitive Analytic Therapist and Clinical Supervisor (ACAT), and an accredited Mentalization-Based Therapy Practitioner (BPC). He is also expanding his practice into coaching and is completing an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Coaching, working towards Senior Practitioner accreditation with the EMCC.
With over two decades of clinical experience, including 14 years in the NHS, Carl has worked across diverse settings from university counselling services and charities to NHS secondary care mental health teams. Since moving into private practice in 2020, he has worked with a wide range of clients, including many professionals in law, finance, consulting, technology, and the creative industries, often referred through private healthcare providers such as BUPA. His private work is discreet, relational, and tailored, offering a reflective space for those navigating both personal challenges and demanding careers.
Before establishing his practice, Carl was lead for the Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) and Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) services within the Lewisham Integrated Psychological Therapies Team (IPTT) at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM).
Earlier in his career, he worked in social housing research with the National Housing Federation, where he coordinated research projects and supported teams of consultants. Alongside this role, he undertook full-time postgraduate training in Counselling Psychology, balancing professional responsibilities with clinical training an experience that strengthened his skills in coordination, evaluation, and reflective practice, qualities that continue to inform his work today.
Professional Background Before Psychology Practice
After completing his undergraduate degree in psychology, Carl began his career at the National Housing Federation’s Feedback Service, a consultancy specialising in social housing research.
During this time, he also undertook his postgraduate training in Counselling Psychology. While the training was full-time, Carl balanced its demands by working initially full-time and later part-time at the NHF.
In the final years of the service, Carl led a business review and transition process, assessing viability as an in-house function or standalone company.
This chapter of Carl’s career provided a foundation in team coordination, strategic analysis, and reflective evaluation skills he now brings into both coaching and psychological practice.

Carl’s Approach to His Work
Over the years, Carl has seen how powerful it can be when people are given the space to pause, reflect, and make sense of what truly matters to them. His work is shaped not only by extensive clinical training and supervision but also by many years of practice in the NHS, private settings, and in developing services.
Whether working as a psychologist, coach, or supervisor, his approach is grounded in:
Depth and reflection – creating space to look beyond the surface and understand patterns.
Collaboration – working alongside clients and supervisees rather than “on” them.
Practical change – focusing on insights that translate into meaningful shifts in the present.
At its core, Carl’s role is about facilitating thoughtful, structured conversations that help people move forward whether that’s through therapy, coaching, or supervision.
